Tom is highly engaging and personable. If you are looking for inspiration then look no further. Tom tells a great story. He is passionate about mountaineering and other adventurous expeditions.
Over the years, Tom has spoken to over 150 schools, mainly on his successful Mount Everest expedition, where he and his brother became the first British brothers to stand on the summit together. This was their second attempt. It did not all go to plan, as his brother Ben lost 4 toes to frostbite.
He speaks about failure and how one only fails if one gives up. Tom explains that obstacles and setbacks are part of life and they should be used as stepping stones on the way to success and that we can often learn from them as they often bring other opportunities.
Tom's Everest powerpoint presentation is called ‘Journey to the Top’ and he brings in some mountaineering gear such as his oxygen mask, down suit to try on, big warm Everest boots, his ice axe and tent. The talk is finished off with a 12 minute DVD showing footage from the expedition. Question time at the end is often the best part as he goes around the room answering questions from the boys and girls.
Tom has several varied and unusual interests and in 2021, he rode his mountain unicycle 100 miles along the South Downs Way to raise money for Prostate Cancer and in 2023 he took his 54 inch Penny Farthing up to the Outer Hebrides and rode it 330 miles from the southern tip to the lighthouse right at the northern tip of Lewis. He has been known to ride his Penny Farthing in to the lecture hall at a school lecture when talking about inspiration much to the children's delight!
Tom has climbed many other mountains, including Elbrus in Southern Russia, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Aconcagua in South America and the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc in the Alps to name just a few.
Tom lives near the South Downs with his wife and two children.
