Taban is a child genocide survivor from under Saddam Hussein’s regime, and an experienced inspirational speaker and campaigner. In 2014 Taban left her city job feeling compelled to help respond to the ISIS attacks in northern Iraq. In 2016, she went onto found the Lotus Flower, a charity supporting women and girl survivors of conflict.
In 2024, Taban was awarded an OBE for outstanding services to refugees. She was also named a GQ magazine Hero 2024. She is regularly invited to speak on the international stage, including invitations from the House of Lords and the White House, as well as speaking platforms such as TEDx.
She is a representative for a several refugee-led organisations and initiatives including UN Women, UNHCR, and Global Refugee Forum. She is also a member of Girls Not Brides, the Action Network for Forced Displacement and an Ambassador for One Young World.
In her talk, Taban explores how we can all become changemakers if we each take one action. And collectively we have the power to change the lives of many. This is the domino effect. From arriving in the UK as a refugee child genocide survivor, to starting a charity from her kitchen table in 2016, Taban inspires the audience with her personal story of finding purpose through adversity.
