Brian Wheeler joined the RAF in 1992 as an Air Traffic Control Officer. After 8 years, he left and joined NATS (National Air Traffic Services), where he has worked ever since. He is now Deputy General Manager of en-route operations.
In May 2018, Brian became paralysed overnight, caused by a rare condition called cauda equina syndrome. He was told it was likely he would never walk again. Against the odds, he not only learnt to walk but ran a half marathon in September 2021 and gained his pilot's licence in 2022. An advocate for equality for all disabilities, Brian is comfortable talking about all aspects of his disability and how a life-changing injury does not mean life has to be any less enjoyable.
He is also a trustee at Aerobility, a charity which enables people with a disability, without exception, to experience the freedom that flight brings. He is a keen sportsman, enjoying paddle-boarding, running and general fitness and is a private pilot. Brian has a wealth of experience in leadership, team behaviours and as described below dealing with adversity. He is comfortable talking to any audience on a wide range of topics, from mental resilience, empathy and kindness to coping with failure and adapting to change.
Brian’s story shows young people that despite the many challenges that life throws at them; determination, a positive mental attitude and learning to deal with failure will all help in overcoming those challenges and achieve their goals.
