As the world watched in awe watching the London 2012 Olympics, students can now experience their own piece of the sporting action with taking part in ‘Bidding for Gold Games’. Tapping into the buzz around the Olympics, this day will develop young people's research and teamwork skills as they produce a business case for hosting an international sporting extravaganza.
At the start of the day your students will be split up into teams, each forming the bidding committee of an allocated country wanting to host the prestigious games. The first task is to mind map and brainstorm everything they know about the allocated country. The teams must then appoint researchers to go away and find out everything there is to know about their nation. The remaining members of the team concentrate on the business elements of their bid; from branding, mascots, and sponsorship through to celebrity endorsements and even a promotional song. Each team also has the opportunity of boosting their bid by taking part in a sporting challenge out door if weather permits. The day culminates with the teams taking turns to present their bids, each marked by the secret panel of judges in the audience.
The 'Bidding for Gold Games' is a great way to engage students and nurture the transferable skills needed for the workplace.
